Rene Ricard X Madeline Weinrib Rug Collaboration on view at Vito Schnabel Gallery

A rug Madeline made in collaboration with Rene Ricard is included in the exhibition, Rene Ricard, “Growing Up in America,” at Vito Schnabel Gallery, November 12 - December 18, 2021.

The rug, You’re Stepping All Over Me, will be on view publicly for the first time. Weinrib’s collaboration with Ricard took place over several years, beginning when Ricard, “wrote these wonderful poems on images of my rugs in my catalogue,” Weinrib explains. “We decided to turn them into rugs which was thrilling for both of us. Rene loved carpets and textiles and had an extraordinary knowledge of them. He then sent little snippets of his handwriting to the weavers. We wanted to ensure that they understood every detail of his writing. This went on for a few years, but that was fine. Neither one of us was in a rush. We would work very intensely, and then we would stop until he felt like working again. This was okay for me, as I understood his moods and process. I knew the rugs would eventually be completed. He died two weeks before our first finished rug arrived.” - Madeline Weinrib

The exhibition was reviewed by Ilka Scobie for Artlyst.

Also on view are hand-knotted rugs that are a collaboration between Rene and Madeline Weinrib. These originated as poems Rene playfully scrawled in a catalogue of Weinrib’s textile work. These woollen and silk treasures were completed just weeks after Rene’s death.”
