The Farsi word for ‘needle’, suzani also refers to the colorful, intricately-worked embroideries that have been crafted by women throughout Central Asia for centuries. Influenced by the look of Persian carpets and by the rich commingling of cultures along the fabled Silk Road trading routes, traditional suzanis draw on a whimsical vocabulary of motifs chosen as much for their symbolic significance as for their decorative appeal. Hand-embroidered in Uzbekistan, Madeline’s suzani designs wittily reinterpret this tradition, translating its essence and charm in a sophisticated, contemporary way. Silk embroidery on silk and cotton ground.
